When choosing between colleges, how did you decide amongst the colleges that you were accepted into?
According to their website, Stanislaus State will cost approximately twenty grand if you are doing your undergraduate work on top of living in the university this school year. However, as a student at Modesto Junior College you have the luxury of being a full-time student for only a few hundred dollars per semester while living in your own home. In my case, the bill for the 2017 fall semester was only $679 (for 13 units total). For the Associate Degree Nursing program, the bill will only be about six thousand dollars. Add in the cheap prices on top of the beauty of both East and West campuses (and the fact I can still attend while still living in my parent's house), I just figured it made more sense to start my college career there.
What would you personally say are your school's strengths?
Modesto Junior College has two beautiful campuses that makes you feel at home. They are laid out in a fashion that is easy to get familiar with once you start. However, you ever found yourself lost you can easily find someone (whether it be a student or staff member) to help you; the community at MJC is very friendly! The staff at MJC are also fantastic. If you ever needed help with something, they will do everything in their power to help you find resolution in your issue whether it be through their direct assistance or by pointing you to someone they know can help you. The East campus has a large library that is great for both collaborator and lone-wolf students. If you are working on a group project and need a room to work in, both libraries offer rooms you can schedule to have for a certain amount of time. Tuition is also great here, as the enrollment fee is only $46 per unit.
How accessible are administrators, registrars, professors, teaching assistants, etc.?
School administrators or professors are accessible both physically and electronically. You can always email them with your concern and usually they get back to you in a timely manner. If you ever want to see a college counselor, you can either make an appointment or simply walk in. I strongly suggest you make an appointment first as walk-in lines can get crazy, especially later in the day. Professors are usually available during breaks or sometime after class, you just need to coordinate a good time for you both to meet. If worst comes to worst, you can always Email the professor with your concerns.
What are the classes like? Are they more lecture-based or discussion-based? Do you often partake in group projects?
Classes vary on the professor in terms of group projects- for my Human Communications class it was a mix of the two, where my Nursing Guidance is mostly lecture based. If you take online classes, expect a lot of group discussions. For physical classes, group projects may vary in frequency but always expect at least one from each of your classes. From my experience thus far, all of my classes had professors who had high expectations for everyone. The workload varies per class, but at the minimum, it will be parallel to that of a Pre-AP class.
What is one thing that you wished you knew before you started at your university?
I was given enough information about Modesto Junior College thanks to the college counselor at Gregori and at MJC.
How would you describe the location of your college? (climate, weather, etc.) Would you describe it as a college town? (urban, suburban, rural) Does the location allow for activities outside of campus? (farmer's markets, concerts, etc.)
Modesto Junior College has two campuses - an East and a West campus. The East campus is located in a neighborhood while the West is located in more of a business area. During the Summer we have heat waves and high humidity, fall is warm and humid, winter cools down and has rain, and in spring it warms back up again! MJC has concerts and other events but they are usually inside the campus.
What types of clubs are offered on campus? Are you involved in any?
Modesto Junior College has a wide variety of clubs you can join. Some of the clubs offered on campus are Anatomy Club, Anthropology club, Astronomy Club, Black Student Union, Chemistry Club, Child Development, and more! I am looking into joining the Anatomy club when I take my anatomy class next year.
Are you able to talk to your professors on a one-on-one basis? Are office hours available to help you with questions with course-work?
Yes, you are able to talk to your professors on a one-on-one basis either in person or by Email. Some professors have posted office hours, others may allow you to make an appointment outside them.
If you are far away from home, do you ever feel homesick? How do you balance relationships with family and friends from home?
As Modesto Junior College is only less than twenty miles away from me, hence I do not need to move out of my house.
