Is there anything that you mainly focused on during your application? Any suggestions for seniors who are applying?

I started working at a tutoring firm when I moved to Oregon last year and one of the things I have noticed about the college application process while working with students in that setting is how important I think the essay is to the application process. I do not think I really realized or prioritized the essay all that much when I went through the process myself but now seeing high school students go through this I see how the essay can either really enhance your application or be somewhat of a draw back. What I mean by this is that for competitive schools they are going to get lots of applications and likely most are going to have similar GPAs and SAT/ACT scores. So, in those cases what makes the difference? Well to me, it seems it is likely the essay where you get to display your personality and what makes you different from all of those names on paper with similar qualifications as you.
