How did you decide on what to major in?

Ideally I would love to work in the aerospace industry, and with a Mechanical Engineering degree I can do so while also keeping my options open to other careers in a wide range of fields.

Is there a lot of flexibility at your school in changing majors?

Yes, at Cal Poly it is fairly easy to switch majors as long as you keep up your grades and the major you want to switch to is within the same field as your previous one. For example switching from Mechanical Engineering to Aerospace Engineering would be fairly simple, as a lot of the classes overlap. On the other hand, switching from Mechanical Engineering to Software Engineering might be a little more difficult as they are in more separate concentrations of the School of Engineering. However, I've talked to many students who have made switches like this, sometimes even 2 or 3 switches of major, before they settled in. Just keep in mind the longer you wait the more it has the possibility of setting you back.

How did you think you will use your major in a career?

With Mechanical Engineering being such a broad, widely applicable major, there is such a variety of jobs that it can go towards. I can work in the aerospace or automotive industry, mechatronics or HVAC, really anything with a design and build aspect, an ME degree will do. Even outside my field, an engineering degree from Cal Poly is very attractive to prospective employers.
