How did you decide on what to major in?

Fun story, I applied as undeclared to all UC and Sociology for Cal Poly because you can't come in undeclared. Find something you're interested, and weed out majors you know for sure you are not interested and don't want to spend your time studying. I was interested in psychology for a while, but I knew I didn't want to be a psychologist or psychiatrist. Sociology is the study of interactions between individuals and cultures and I've always found it interesting in understanding why people interact and socialize with others the way they do. Even though I don' know what kind of career I want for sure, I knew I enjoyed helping people whether volunteering or going on a missions trip and that I had an interest in how people work together in society and came up with majoring in sociology.

Is there a lot of flexibility at your school in changing majors?

Cal Poly requires you to declare a major when applying to the school and does not allow change of major until the second quarter. Because each major is impacted, there is a required process of meetings and keeping up with your academics to switch majors. Although it isn't easy to switch majors, it's definitely not impossible, the school just want to help you make the right decisions going into what kind of career you are looking for.
